Why Do We Procrastinate?
In a nutshell, you procrastinate when you put off things that you should be focusing on right now. Usually in favour of doing something that is more enjoyable or that you’re more comfortable doing.
Procrastinators invest their time in the wrong tasks. Sometimes this is simply because they don't understand the difference between urgent tasks and important tasks, and jump straight into getting on with urgent tasks that aren't actually important.
Another common cause of procrastination is feeling overwhelmed by the task. You may not know where to begin. Or you may doubt that you have the skills or resources you think you need. So you seek comfort in doing tasks you know you're capable of completing. Unfortunately, the big task isn't going to go away – truly important tasks rarely do.
Other causes of procrastination include:
• Waiting for the “right” mood or the “right” time to tackle important
task at hand
• A fear of failure or success
• Underdeveloped decision making skills
• Poor organizational skills
• Perfectionism ("I don't have the right skills or resources to do this
perfectly now, so I won't do it at all.")
If you're honest with yourself, you probably know when you're procrastinating. But to be sure, you first need to make sure you know your priorities.
Your priorities flow from the key responsibilities of your roles and from your goals. We have other roles besides our work role. You may be a father, husband, friend, athlete, investor, etc.
If you are putting something off because you just don't want to do it, and you really can't delegate the work to someone else, you need to find ways of motivating yourself to get moving.
The following approaches can be helpful here:
• Make up your own rewards.
• Ask someone else to keep you accountable
• Identify the unpleasant consequences of NOT doing the task.
If you're putting off starting a project because you find it overwhelming, you need to take a different approach.
Here are some tips:
- Break the project into a set of smaller, more manageable tasks.
- You may find it helpful to create an action plan.
- Get some traction.
Start with some quick, small tasks if you can, even if these aren't the logical first actions. You'll feel that you're achieving things, and so perhaps the whole project won't be so overwhelming after all.

"Continuous Improvements" with Clint Best
I trust you are enjoying the tail end of your summer, either taking vacation or covering for someone who is.
I wrote this article on procrastination some months ago and thought it was very appropriate for the times we are in. There are some concepts that we can never review enough times, and reducing procrastination from our lives ranks highly for most of us.
I notice most of us operate by a belief system.
- Where did you get your sense of urgency from?
- How do you recognize and separate the urgent from the important in your life?
- What are some of the things that you are uncomfortable with that aren’t getting done?
- What if they did get done?
- Who could you delegate these to, that would enjoy doing them and get them done on time?
- What do you believe is possible?
It’s been a bit of a rough summer for some businesses and industries experiencing the tough decisions that come along with “right sizing” their companies to the current economic conditions.
This can be overwhelming. Is there something overwhelming you? Are you able to recognize when you are procrastinating? How do you respond to that?
At the end o f the day, we learn more from our mistakes, than our successes – so making any decision is better than making no decision at all. Often there is no right or wrong decision – there is only the one we make and then set about making it right.

"Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell
"Outlier" is a scientific term to describe things or phenomena that lie outside normal experience.
Outliers is a non-fiction book written by Malcolm Gladwell and published by Little, Brown and Company on November 18, 2008.
In Outliers, Gladwell examines the factors that contribute to high levels of success. To support his thesis, he examines the causes of why the majority of Canadian ice hockey players are born in the first few months of the calendar year, how Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates achieved his extreme wealth, and how two people with exceptional intelligence, Christopher Langan and J. Robert Oppenheimer, end up with such vastly different fortunes. Throughout the publication, Gladwell repeatedly mentions the "10,000-Hour Rule", claiming that the key to success in any field is, to a large extent, a matter of practising a specific task for a total of around 10,000 hours.
